Helpful Tips for your Electrical Safety at Home

Electricity is important. We use it oftentimes. Almost everything now cannot function without electricity. That’s why we have to be cautious on how we use it in our homes to prevent electrical problems which can eventually cause serious damages such as fire.

Here are some tips on how to help homeowners manage and take good care of their electrical systems at home.

Overloading circuits is a No-No!

We have to be aware of the appliances we have-particularly its voltage and wattage. We also have to be mindful of which sockets or what are the appliances that are already plugged in on a particular socket. Because plugging in 2 appliances at the same time in one socket, or plugging an extra appliance through an extension cord is a high risk and can cause electrical fire. One more thing, major appliances such as, washer, dryer, electric stove, refrigerator, and A/C should be plugged into their OWN wall outlet since they consume and use heavy power.

Most of the time, an overloaded outlet will automatically trip a breaker once it detects a high current or power level and cuts off the power to the circuit. But when the breaker malfunctions, that is where the problems occur. To prevent it from happening, you have to be keen in noticing burning smells, dimming or malfunctions lights (on-off) as well as buzzing outlets or switches because that is already an indicator that you have too many appliances plugged in all around your home.

Use of extension cords

Once you feel an extension cord is warm to touch, it only means one thing-over use. So, stop using it already! Extension cords are intended for temporary use to plug in electrical items. They don’t function like the way a wall socket does!

Damaged? Replace it.

For power cords, little by little, its protective barrier insulating the wires becomes damaged and tears after it has been used for some time. If you come to notice, when you get in contact with an open wire, like those of your charging cables, you get an electrical shock. So, the moment that you notice a cord or cable is already worn out, have it repaired. Or better yet, have it changed or replaced. After all, it’s for your safety anyway.

Water and electricity

It is widely known that water conducts electricity. So, mixing or combining them is very dangerous. Always make sure that your appliances and your wall sockets are away from any source of water.

Have it checked!

How good does it feel without worrying anything about your safety? Having a professional technician check your electrical system on a regular basis is a must! Because you will never know when potential problems may arise and progress to even more complicated and costly ones. And we don’t want that!

These steps may be simple, but they are your first steps to be worry-free when it comes to your home’s electrical systems. I mean, who doesn’t want to go to bed at night without even a hint of stress?
